OPINIONS, PLEASE…

Even though the current Stony Creek Bead class schedule goes through December, we are already planning for the next one.  Here is a sneak peek at what we are doing.

What we would like to know is… are there any projects, techniques, products that you would like to see a class on?  All (kind) suggestions are welcomed, just shoot us an e-mail at: StonyCreekBead@hotmail.com

Thank you and happy beading!

Embroidery, Anyone? It’s no secret that we LOVE embroidery here at Stony Creek Bead. We just got in two new books to fuel that passion.

Bead Embroidery Jewelry Projects by Jamie Could Eakin is filled with so much good information!  Not only does she give you projects to do, but she writes about how to make things fit, how to layout designs, how to use beads in your stash (and make them work), how to… well, you get the idea.  There is just a LOT of information in this book.

Soutache & Bead Embroidery by Amee Sweet-McNamara is a great book on the newest trend in embroidery – Soutache.  Not familiar with Soutache?  Traditionally it is used in high-end clothing -you know that little strip in you wool coat where the wool meets the lining?  That’s soutache.  Amee takes this small, flat cording to a whole new art form.  Flip through her book and you will see what we mean.

Have you seen the new pendants from Turtle Soup Beads?

Every one of them is unique (as they are hand tinted) and every one of them is beautiful.  Come in to see them for yourself.

Bead Collections Are Now Available!

Many of you have asked us to bring back our Bead Collections.  We listened – and they are now ready for you.  There are twelve colors to start with and we will add more as time goes on.  The Collections are available in our store or on our Esty site.  (www.StonyCreekBead.etsy.com)

How are these amazing collections created?
We start with an inspiration – a picture, a memory, a feeling – often found in our “Inspiration Journals” (if you don’t have one of your own, you should!)  We then gather beads in all sizes and shapes that represent that inspiration.  The beads are divided and layered into the tubes, and priced accordingly.

Within each Collection, the tubes’ content may vary slightly, but they are all hand-packed to the top.  Beads are not just for jewelry – you can use them to create all kinds of wonderful things.

The Collections are economical to use when you want a variety of beads instead of buying whole strands and tubes of just one style of bead.  Use these beads for any free-form beading, fringe, embroidery, crochet, & more.

Small Changes – Big Differences

Recently, Sue wanted to study how bead choices affect a design.  She observed how changes in the transparency of the beads and using matte or shiny finishes contribute to the effect of a design.

Sue picked one of her favorite patterns – the Tapestry Bracelet (click here to buy the pattern).  The results are pretty interesting.

Similarities
  • All three bracelets are in the same general color family of teal-blue-green, with varying accents colors.
  • The center rondelles in all three bracelets have shiny, faceted surfaces.

Bracelet #1
  • Medium color contrast; mix of matte and shiny
  • Fire polish – Matte transparent
  • Seed beads
    • 11° – Matte half-covered transparent (Apollo finish)
    • 8° – Matte opaque

Bracelet #2
  • High color contrast; all shiny surfaces
  • Fire polish – Transparent (shiny)
  • Seed beads
    • 11° – Bronze-lined crystal, very shiny
    • 8° – Color-lined shiny

Bracelet #3
  • Medium color contrast; matte or low-gloss surfaces
  • Lentil shaped beads replace the fire polish used in the other two bracelets, eliminating the outer loop of beads.

By making a few small changes, Sue created big differences in the final piece of jewelry.  Consider what small changes you can make in your current project and how it can affect the total outcome.

We are SO EXCITED to announce that Shelley Pleines (formally Shelley Nybakke) is coming to teach at Stony Creek Bead!!! She will be here November 22-24, 2013.

Shelley requires that students have a good working knowledge of Right Angle Weave before coming to these classes.  If you do not yet know RAW, sign up for either a private lesson or one of our introductory classes so you will feel confident and comfortable in her classes:  Reality Bracelet – October 1, or Hammertone – October 24 (more to come on those).

Since Shelley is coming from out-of state, we will not give any refund for cancellations unless we can fill your spot from the wait list.  Thank you for your understanding.  Registration is now open.  Space is already limited.  734.544.0904.

Steamy Windows
Friday, November 22   5-8 PM
$50
This one reminded me of Stained Glass Windows.  But that is sort of a boring name for me and has probably been used numerous times already.  So Steamy Windows it is.  That name reminds me of my high school days and steamy times in a Chevy Super Sport.  And of course no one describes Steamy Windows better than Tina Turner.  Layered Right Angle Weave. Both the perfect necklace and bracelet.

Slow Hand
Saturday, November 23         10-4
$80
Because I have always loved the song by  the Pointer Sisters, (yes I am old), because I didn't get this sample done in time for the Bead & Button Show, and because somehow I got very very lucky and ended up with my very own man with a slow hand.  Actually two slow hands!  Right Angle Weave with 8/0s and 11/0s and a splash of 15/0s.  Hidden snap clasp.  Basic knowledge of RAW is all that is required.  You can embellish any way you want.  All pearls, all crystals, firepolish.... You can make it wide or skinny.  You can do anything you want!  Except of course steal my man with the slow hand.

Veronica’s Vision
Sunday, November 24  10-4
$80
My wonderful friend from Sweden, Veronica Velong, actually was the first to make this desig and it is amazing to think about the people and places I have been lucky enough to come to know ALL BECAUSE OF MY LOVE OF BEADING.  If I can pass that along to just a few people, then I'm a happy happy happy girl.
n based on my layered right angle weave technique.  I adored it from the minute I saw it.  She has given me permission to teach her wonderful creation.  I feel very lucky to know Veronica

It's All About the Layers

According to InStyle Magazine, one of the biggest trends for this summer is layers and layers of bracelets.  Some of you have always rocked this look.  For the rest of you, try it!  It’s a fun way of showing off all of your hard work and talent.

One trend in layered bracelets, is to wrap things to a chain.  Here I used 7” of rolo chain, 8” of crystal chain, and 5 feet of waxed cotton.  For a pop of color use the nylon, Superlon cord that we have in stock, rather than the cotton.

With rolo chain, the links are in two definite directions – they alternate between up and down, left and right.  To make this bracelet:  Leave a 3” tail of your cording (to knot later), and come UP through the second link in the rolo chain.  Wrap AROUND the crystal chain and go THROUGH the next link of the rolo.  Come UP through the next link of the rolo chain…. Continue until the desired length is reached.  Knot the cord.  Leave the last link of the rolo chain open.  Attach your clasp to that last link.

I know that these are super-fast instructions, so come in to see me and we can go over it better.

Do You Have Skills?

At Stony Creek Bead, we are firm believers in learning basic techniques, and learning them well.  Once you have those skills to build on, you can have fun creating beautiful art.

We have two technique classes coming up that we believe everyone should take.  If you have not taken a basic stringing class nor a wrapped loop (earring) class, call to sign up.  We limit the space to eight people, so call soon.  734.544.0904

Basic Stringing
Thursday, May 23     6-8 PM            $30
You don’t have to spend time “reinventing the wheel.”  We can teach you all you need to know to be successful – jewelry design, how to make your pieces fit, and the best way to finish the clasp combination.

Earrings & More
Tuesday, May 28       6-8 PM            $30
Everyone who makes any sort of bead jewelry needs to know how to make an excellent Wrapped  Loop.   No excuses!  Earrings, pendants, joining clasps, multiple strands all use this vital technique.

New Contest!

BeadStyle Magazine has a new contest for you!  October, 2013, is “Visit Your Local Bead Store” month.  To celebrate, the October issue is going to be filled with designs that you have created, and we (the stores) have submitted.

If you are not familiar with BeadStyle, be sure to look at a copy.  Most of their designs are basic stringing, wrapped loop, simple sewing, etc.  Remember – simple techniques, plus luxurious materials, makes an incredible piece of art.

We, Stony Creek Bead, need a high resolution picture of your design by July 1st.  Be sure to include your name.

We will send the pictures and information to BeadStyle.  BeadStyle will have them posted on their site from July 12-21.  During that time, be sure to have all of your family & friends vote for your design.  The top three designs will be featured in the October issue of BeadStyle.  How cool is that?
